What is Vaultwarden?
Vaultwarden is an open-source, alternative implementation of the Bitwarden server API written in Rust. It was created to solve the high resource consumption associated with the official Bitwarden backend stack. By replacing heavy enterprise services with an efficient system binary, Vaultwarden allows home-lab administrators, privacy-focused developers, and small organization IT managers to host a full-featured credential vault on low-power hardware like a Raspberry Pi 4 equipped with only 1 GB of system RAM. Functionally, Vaultwarden acts as an API backend service. It receives encrypted authentication payloads and sync requests from standard Bitwarden client software, including official iOS and Android apps, web browser extensions, and command-line interfaces. Vaultwarden processes these REST API endpoints, manages secure user accounts, enforces access policies, and stores double-encrypted binary data inside lightweight relational databases without needing to decrypt the underlying payloads. First, Vaultwarden fully supports core client capabilities including secure notes, identity templates, auto-fill credit card records, and custom user fields. Second, it includes built-in support for Bitwarden Send, a feature that enables users to securely share end-to-end encrypted raw text or files up to 50 MB with configurable deletion timers and passphrase protection. Third, it implements comprehensive two-factor authentication (2FA) mechanisms, enabling enforcement of TOTP time-based tokens, Duo Security hooks, YubiKey OTP, and WebAuthn hardware keys across all vault access points. Compared to alternative self-hosted platforms like KeePass, which rely on local file synchronization, Vaultwarden offers centralized client-server syncing across multiple devices simultaneously. In contrast to the official C#/.NET Bitwarden server requiring 2 GB to 4 GB of RAM, Vaultwarden operates within a lean 30 MB to 50 MB memory footprint while maintaining cross-compatibility with all offi
