What is Tiny PNG?

TinyPNG is an open-source image compression solution designed to shrink PNG and JPEG graphics through quantization and metadata removal. Its primary objective is to decrease asset bandwidth consumption without degrading perceptual visual quality. Content creators, frontend engineering teams, and mobile app developers utilize this software to optimize raster assets prior to deployment. The software accepts high-resolution PNG (24-bit or 32-bit color depth) and JPEG files as input and evaluates the color distribution of each frame. It outputs optimized PNG assets with reduced 8-bit color palettes and JPEG binaries stripped of ancillary metadata markers like EXIF header flags and color profiles. A 2.5 megabyte raw PNG photograph, for instance, can often be compressed down to 550 kilobytes while maintaining exact pixel dimensions. First, the engine performs smart lossy quantization, converting 32-bit RGBA images with millions of colors into compact 8-bit indexed PNGs with up to 256 distinct palette entries. Second, it maintains full alpha channel transparency, ensuring that smooth translucent gradient edges remain crisp against variable page backgrounds. Third, the tool integrates lossy JPEG encoding heuristics to eliminate high-frequency chrominance noise while preserving edge crispness. Compared to traditional lossless compression utilities like optipng or pngcrush—which rarely achieve file size reductions greater than 10% to 15%—TinyPNG achieves size reductions ranging from 60% to 80%. When evaluated alongside general vector utilities or lossy SVG tools, TinyPNG focuses specifically on pixel grid optimization rather than geometric path reduction.
