What is Kleki?
Kleki is an open-source digital painting application optimized for lightweight raster graphics creation inside web browsers. It solves the problem of high entry costs and heavy resource demands associated with traditional desktop digital art suites. Visual artists, concept sketchers, and educators use Kleki to draw, paint, and edit images without installing complex software packages. The application accepts raw user inputs including mouse coordinates, pen tablet pressure thresholds ranging from 0.0 to 1.0, and keyboard shortcuts. It processes these inputs to alter pixel arrays within an HTML5 canvas element, ultimately exporting high-resolution bitmap assets in formats such as PNG, JPEG, or native multi-layer KLK files. First, Kleki includes a full-featured multi-layer system that allows non-destructive composition across independent image planes, complete with individual alpha channels and opacity controls from 0% to 100%. Second, it integrates mathematical blending modes—such as Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Darken, and Lighten—that dynamically blend color vectors between stacked layers. Third, the application utilizes the W3C Pointer Events API to deliver hardware pressure sensitivity for active digitizer pens, modulating stroke size and alpha transparency dynamically. Compared to desktop raster suites like Corel Painter or Adobe Photoshop, Kleki provides instant cold-start loading times under one second while maintaining low system memory usage.
