What is Browser Image Compression?
Browser Image Compression is an open-source JavaScript library distributed under the MIT license that performs lossy and lossless image optimization within client web browsers. Front-end engineers implement this library to reduce file sizes for user-submitted graphics, such as JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, prior to sending those files across network interfaces. The primary purpose of the library is to take an uncompressed File or Blob object, scale its dimensions based on maximum width or height thresholds, and iteratively adjust output quality to satisfy user-defined file size limits. For instance, a 12-megabyte camera upload measuring 4000 by 3000 pixels can be converted into a 450-kilobyte asset measuring 1920 by 1440 pixels entirely in client memory. First, the library provides automatic EXIF orientation handling, ensuring that photos taken on iOS or Android devices retain correct visual rotation during scaling operations. Second, it implements background processing via Web Workers, preventing main-thread rendering freezes while handling high-resolution camera assets. Third, it features an automated binary search loop that dynamically tunes quality settings until the target megabyte size is met. When compared to backend image processing servers like ImageMagick or Sharp pipelines, client-side compression eliminates server compute overhead and memory spikes. While server pipelines excel at bulk processing after ingestion, client-side execution prevents multi-megabyte uploads from consuming limited cellular data and slowing down form submissions.
